Congo DRC

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is named after the Congo River which runs through the country. It is very densely populated, the 4th highest is Africa and 17th highest in the world. As well as being rich in culture and tradition with over 200 ethnic groups, the country is also very rich in natural resources. The DRC contributes to much of the worlds cobalt, diamond and gold production. It is these precious metals and minerals that have led to the exploitation of the nation for many years and has led to much of its political instability.

There is a large amount of rainfall throughout the DRC as can be expected of a country along the equator. This rainfall facilitates the huge rain forest that takes up much of the country and is the second largest in the world after the Amazon. As can be expected, there is a huge amount of biodiversity within this area. This includes a large number of rare and endemic plants and animals such as the bonobo and the white rhino.

Unfortunately these extremely bio-diverse areas are under threat due to the civil war that raged in the 90's, a high amount of poverty, logging and the 'bush meat' issue. Many areas are listed as 'in danger' by UNESCO.

Most of the countries population lives in rural areas. The villages spread throughout the country range from 10 to 200 houses with the biggest villages being home to approximately 500 people.

Music is the most well known part of the Congolese culture. Many other African countries music is based on Congolese origins. At the moment the music in the DRC is a blend of Cuban, Congolese and West African.
